ownership society
it is so (pick a word here) to see and hear john mc cain pushing for "regulations" when his ENTIRE CAREER in the senate he was always for DEREGULATION. flip flopping john, don't know what hat he has on.
look up the GRAHAM COMMODITY FUTURES MODERATION ACT if you want to see how this debacle came to be. (and yes, that is the PHIL GRAHAM, mc cain's economic advisor) the GCFMA was designed to keep regulators from controlling new financial tools descrbribed as "credit swaps", these are the instruments like sub prime mortages to be bundled together and sold as "securities."
under the GRAHAM (WITH MC CAIN AS AN ENTHUSIASTIC BACKER) ACT neither the sec nor the commodities futures trading commission were able to examine the books of all these companies who are now imploding.
and now, brothers and sisters, we are the ownership society that bush promised; it seems we, the taxpayer, now own banks, financial trading companies and several million homes. be sure and send your thank you note to bush/mccain by voting democratic this election.
(i know you can't vote for obama because he is black and lazy and violent....those are some of the reasons people gave in a new poll that was in the h.h. paper this morning.) well, stay racist and stay republican and stay fucked if that is what you believe.

Just before I read your blog, I read this post from Sharp as a Marble. Somehow when administrations change, they don't give back the powers that the other side took, or even exchange them for the powers that they want--Power just accumulates in the hands of government. Regulating titty bars, weed, guns, corporations--All part of the same problem.
I don't mean that none of this should be regulated at all--Titty bars probably shouldn't have picture windows facing a schoolyard, don't sell weed to minors, corporations shouldn't be able to lie to their investors. But just because you can regulate something doesn't mean you should. If corporations want to pursue stupid strategies, they should be allowed, but with no bailout.
As a final note, I’ve recently come across several comments to the effect that Shock is supposed to be some kind of saint. That’s right, a saint- someone who has nothing but the very best, selfless intentions at heart, and that these will serve to benefit all mankind.
I don’t know what the precise qualifications are for sainthood, but I don’t think they consist of: (1) encouraging people to get turned on to drugs, because this is supposedly a hip thing to do, (2) joke about it in your comedy routines, and (3) claim that you now want to save people after the drugs have totally screwed up their lives, as if you were suddenly on a mission of mercy.
All I can say is that anyone who buys into these saintly intentions is also likely to believe that Shock is still one of America’s foremost standup comedians, which he genuinely seems to believe as well.
A comic you are, but a saint you ain’t.
Well Rudy-I've got to admit (having intimate knowledge) that Ron Shock is no Saint. But he IS a very very fucking intelligent man, who has a knack for distilling complex ideas into easy language, and the balls to present them.
And as far as your statement that RS encourages people to take drugs "because it's the hip thing to do" You obviously don't read these blogs much. The original reason the counterculture turned to mind-expanding drugs was...wait for it...TO EXPAND THEIR MINDS. Jerkoff frat boys and yuppies take drugs "because they think they (and the drugs) are 'hip"" Ron encourages people to expand their minds. If drugs help (ask Thomas Jefferson) than so be it.
And as far as Shock being one of America's foremost standup comics. Well, ...he is. You don't have a 30-year career as a national touring comic if you aren't. You don't get on Carson if you aren't.
You don't get a Showtime special if you aren't.
gee, liz wolinski, i thought you said several posts ago that you were not posting any more. this one i am going to leave up because you are now becoming something of a running joke to my readers.
and you found someone who thinks i am a "saint"? cool.
i have never encouraged anyone to take drugs, that is a personal choice and not my place to encourage one way or the other. however, since you have done many a 'joint' with me i find this post even more hypocritical than most of yours.
you say i "claim to want to save people after they have screwed up their lives". gee, liz, you are such a poor liar. ANYONE who has seen my shows know that is such total bullshit.
liz, you really need to concentrate on getting your life together and quit writing to me..unless it a notice that you are finally going to pay back the money you owe me and mike. (slim chance on that, huh?)
as far as comic goes...my work speaks for itself the same as your work speaks for you.
